US President Donald Trump raging on the way the United Nations works.
After his recent long speech at the United Nations, the discussion of US President Donald Trump and UN has intensified. Unlike the fixed time limit of 15 minutes, Trump gave a long speech of about 56 minutes. During this time, he raised the functioning of the United Nations and also claimed that he has to do the work of the UN. He said that he stopped the seven wars going on. He also brought bad escalators and teleprompators into international debate. Why is the situation deteriorating, Trump openly spoke on this.
Let’s go on the pretext that what are the responsibilities with the United Nations? Where do this institution get money from? What does it return to the member countries in return? What did Trump remind?
Why was the United Nations established?
The United Nations (UN) was established in 1945 with the Second World War that there should be no mass war in future, resolve problems with nation dialogue and cooperation and maintains stability in the world. But today when we see its activities and attitude of member countries, many questions arise. The United Nations has many types of responsibilities which can be broadly divided into seven parts.
- Maintaining peace and security: The most important responsibility of UN is to stop war, sending peace forces in struggling areas and promote talks etc. The job of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is to maintain world peace.
- Human rights protection: Through various treaties and human rights council, this institution monitors fundamental rights worldwide. It has the right to intervene in case of any disturbance.
- Human assistance: Food, medicine and help of refugees in needy countries during war, disaster or famine are also one of the important responsibilities of the United Nations. Many times member countries have been providing help to the victims through the United Nations. The World Food Program (WFP) and the refugee High Commissioner (UNHCR) are examples of this.
- International Law and Justice: The International Court of Court (ICJ) was established so that there could be a peaceful resolution of disputes between countries.
- Economic-Social Development: It is the important responsibility of the United Nations to take initiative to remove poverty, improve health services and encourage education. Sustainable Development Goals (SDGS) is part of this purpose.
- Climate and Environment: Initiations like Paris Climate Agreement and IPCC are run under the umbrella of UN.
- Providing global platform: Every country, big or small, can speak in the General Assembly. This equal platform is very important for many countries.
What did Trump remind?
Donald Trump caught attention to many issues in his speeches at the United Nations General Assembly.
- America First approach: Trump clearly stated that every nation should give priority to its citizens and national interest.
- UN’s disability: He taunted that UN is often not meeting his own objectives.
- financial burden: America gives the most money, but often in return, the same countries criticize the policies of America.
- Tight stance on Iran and North Korea: Trump demanded a ban on Islamic extremism and nuclear weapons.
Here are 2 minutes of lowlights from trumps rambling, hour-long address to the un general assemble that twitter is called one of the most embarrassing mothers in Recent us history.

Where does the United Nations get money?
The United Nations income mainly comes from member countries. There are two types of contributions in this.
- Contribution to General Budget: Every country gives a share based on its economic capacity and GDP. The US gives 20-22% of this budget, followed by countries like China, Japan, Germany and India.
- Budget of peace establishment mission: All member countries also contribute to this item, but the top contribution is from America.
What do countries get in return?
- In a way, this investment changes into soft power and global effects.
- Small countries are able to put their point in front of big forces on platform like UN.
- Large donors get indirect dominance on international policies.
- America has been repeatedly raising the question that despite throwing so much money, it does not see the results as per wish.

The United Nations is struggling with many challenges.
Bad escalator and telepropter… Why the situation of UN is deteriorating?
During Trump’s speech, the teleprompter in the United Nation deteriorated. When he was coming for a speech, he faced a bad escalator. The United Nations later clarified that Trump’s teleprompter was running his team. However, during the speech, both of these shortcomings were discussed by Trump and with this, he took many sarcasm at the United Nations. If it is considered a metaphor, then these incidents give some special indication.
- The “escalator” of the global system means that the institutions are not able to work smoothly.
- There is a hindrance in the “Telepumpter”. There are big principles, but they do not appear to land on the real land.
Today the United Nations and world politics are struggling with many challenges.
- Pulls of superpowers: The rivalry between the US, China and Russia causes the Security Council to be paralyzed several times. The weighto of one country stops the entire proposal.
- Financial imbalance: Most of the big countries give most money, the responsibility of the rest of the countries is very limited. In such a situation, the imbalance is very visible. This increases dissatisfaction among the contributors.
- New problems: The slow action of UN on global issues like cyber security, epidemic, climate crisis is often criticized.
- National vs. Global interest: Member nations keep their national interest above with global cooperation. It is clearly visible in the US First or China’s Belt and Road Initiative.
Now what next?
- improvement required: It is necessary to increase the number of permanent members in the Security Council. Countries like India, Japan, Germany, Brazil can be included.
- Financial justice: The burden of contribution should be divided in a more equitable manner.
- Transparency: UN agencies should clearly give a clear account of their functioning.
- Adopt new technology: Transparent dialogue and fast decisions can be possible using digital forums.
The United Nations is the biggest platform to expect humanity, but its credibility is surrounded by challenges. Leaders like Donald Trump openly said that America spends a lot but in return it does not get the desired respect or results. This complaint is not only of him, but of many countries. “Bad escalator and stalled telepramputter” is a symbol of the bad system in which the intention is beautiful, but the system is stuck. If the United Nations is able to improve itself in changing times, then the coming generations will consider it a heritage of human civilization. If there is no improvement, then this institution will remain only an idealistic experiment in the pages of history.
