Superstarz Kick Off Title Defense with a Win
In an impressive start to their title defense, South Delhi Superstarz secured a 29-run victory against Central Delhi Queens during the inaugural match of the Women’s Delhi Premier League (DPL) held at Arun Jaitley Stadium on Thursday.
Nishika and Tanisha Shine with Fifties
Batting first, the Superstarz set a challenging target of 156 runs for 5 wickets in their allotted 20 overs. Nishika Singh and Tanisha Singh played pivotal roles, each scoring half-centuries to stabilize the innings after an early loss of wickets.
Despite facing early pressure, the duo formed a crucial partnership, adding 82 runs for the third wicket, which helped regain control for South Delhi. They consistently kept the scoreboard ticking and capitalized on scoring opportunities, laying a solid foundation for their total.
Nishika’s dismissal marked the end of their significant partnership, and although South Delhi lost a few more wickets, they managed to finish their innings at 156/5.
Bowling Highlights for Central Delhi
For Central Delhi Queens, Sumiti Soni emerged as the leading bowler, taking 2 wickets for just 13 runs in four overs, while Medhavi Bidhuri also contributed with 2 wickets for 24 runs.
Mahto’s Efforts Fall Short
In response, Central Delhi Queens faced a rocky start, finding themselves at 31 for 3. Monika and Nidhi Mahto then partnered to stabilize the innings, adding 65 runs for the fourth wicket before Monika was dismissed after scoring a brisk 30 runs off 19 balls.
Mahto continued to battle, reaching a commendable half-century. However, the lack of support from her teammates hindered their chase as the required run rate escalated. Ultimately, Mahto was out for a valiant 63 runs off 55 balls, which dashed Central Delhi’s hopes of victory.
The Queens concluded their innings at 127 for 7, falling short of the target by 29 runs. Mayuri Singh was the standout bowler for South Delhi, claiming 2 wickets for 15 runs in her four overs, marking a successful start to the defending champions’ campaign.
