Darwin, August 20: Bangladesh kicked off their two-match Test series against Australia with a memorable victory, defeating the visitors by nine wickets in the first Test.
However, head coach Phil Simmons has cautioned his team to be prepared for a robust comeback from Australia in the second Test. He urged the players to enhance their performance.
Simmons emphasized that while the win in Darwin was significant, the job is not yet complete as they gear up for the second Test at the Great Barrier Reef Arena. Speaking to reporters, he stated, “I have told them, and I will repeat it, that Australia will come back strongly. Therefore, we need to either maintain the same level of performance or improve slightly. If we need to be 1 percent better in certain areas, we must ensure that happens. However, we know they will change their game. They will come at us with a fierce attack.”
Discussing the team’s work ethic, Simmons noted that despite being bowled out for just 54 runs in a warm-up match against the Cricket Australia XI before the Darwin Test, his confidence in the team never wavered. “I saw how we practiced in the three days leading up to the match. Our work ethic did not change. Even though we scored only 54 runs-which was a bad day-the momentum and dedication remained intact. This gives me confidence that the players want to perform well.”
Left-arm fast bowler Shoriful Islam impressed in the nets after joining the main squad, but Simmons indicated he is reluctant to make changes to the winning team. “He brings something different. However, we have just won a Test match. I am one of those who prefers not to change a winning team. So, while there is a possibility, I cannot say for sure.”
He further added, “I am impressed with all the bowlers because I believe they bowled exactly as we planned. They (the Australian team) are good batsmen, world-class batsmen. You try to bowl consistently in areas that test them. This time it worked. It may not work another day. However, as long as we stick to our plan and ensure they are under pressure at all times, that’s what we want.”
Bangladesh’s success in Darwin hinged on their outstanding performance in the first innings, where they batted for 138 overs and scored 426 runs. Simmons wants his team to replicate this performance in the second Test. “Test cricket lasts five days. If my team can bat for 11 hours over those five days, it will put pressure on the other team.”
He concluded, “What I have learned in Test cricket is that you bat, you score. Making a big score in the first innings is always beneficial. Then you put pressure on the other team. That’s what we are trying to achieve-scoring big in the first innings and ensuring the other team has to work hard to reach that score.”
