Suryakumar Yadav did himself no favors ahead of the selection meeting where the Indian team for the Ireland and England series will be picked.
The Indian T20I captain’s elongated poor form with the bat continued in the Triumph Knights’ Mumbai North East opening match of the tournament on Tuesday (June 2) at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
The 36-year-old walked out to bat at number four while chasing a massive total of 210. However, he made just 19 runs in 11 balls before being dismissed by Rahul Sawant. The former World No. 1 T20I batter attempted a slog sweep but was caught by Vaibhav Mali at short leg.
In recent days there has been speculation on whether Suryakumar will continue to remain the captain of the Indian T20I team despite leading the national team to the 2026 T20 World Cup title in their last assignment. Since the start of 2025, the veteran batter has been in poor form in international cricket. His case further weakened after a poor display in the 2026 IPL for Mumbai Indians (MI) with just 270 runs in three games with two half-centuries and an average of 20.76 and a strike rate of 147.54.
After Suryakumar’s early dismissal, the Triumph Knight ended up losing the game by 21 runs despite a 56-bal 93 from Nutan Goel.
Poor Outing For Shreyas Iyer
One player that will be aiming to make a comeback to the Indian T20I side when the selectors meet is the ODI team’s vice-captain Shreyas Iyer. However, he also failed to make an impact in SOBO Mumbai Falcons’ opening game in the competition against ARCS Andheri in the second game of the day at Wankhede. The Falcons’ skipper was dismissed for just five runs after facing seven balls by Andheri skipper Shivam Dube. He edged a delivery outside the off-stump to wicketkeeper Prasad Pawar.
Two-time T20 World Cup winner Dube shared the new ball with Arjun Tendulkar and bowled an incredible spell of 3-17 in 3.2 overs as the South Mumbai-based team was bowled out for 126. The Indian all-rounder made just 16 runs in 16 balls, but his team chased the target with six overs to spare. Dube was awarded the Player of the Match (POTM) award.
