Virat Kohli’s Historic Debut
On August 18, 2008, a young cricketer from Delhi made his international debut, wearing India’s senior jersey for the first time in an ODI against Sri Lanka in Dambulla.
This player was none other than Virat Kohli, who has since become one of the sport’s all-time greats.
Kohli had already made a name for himself by leading the India U19 team to a World Cup victory in 2008, and his entry into international cricket came with immense expectations, marking the beginning of a remarkable journey that transformed the world of cricket.
The First Steps in International Cricket
At just 19 years old during his debut, Kohli received his first cap from then-captain MS Dhoni. He opened the innings alongside his Delhi teammate Gautam Gambhir, who now serves as the head coach of Team India.

Kohli’s Debut Footage Goes Viral
As the cricket community reflects on 18 years since Kohli’s debut, nostalgia swept through social media. The Sony Sports Network shared rare footage of his initial moments in international cricket, showcasing the youthful energy and enthusiasm of the budding star.
In a video posted by Sony Sports on X (formerly Twitter), which quickly gained traction online, Kohli was seen warming up before taking the field as an opener with Gautam Gambhir. Following Gambhir’s dismissal for a duck, Kohli partnered with Suresh Raina.
Kohli managed to hit a single boundary during his debut against Sri Lankan pacer Nuwan Kulasekara. However, his innings was short-lived as he was dismissed for 12 runs off 22 balls, falling victim to the same bowler, marking a modest start to his international career.
Kohli’s Performance in His Debut Series
Despite a humble beginning, Kohli emerged as a key player in the ODI series against Sri Lanka, scoring 159 runs, including a half-century, with an average of 31.80 and a strike rate of 66.52 across five matches. His debut series was the only international series he played in 2008, setting the stage for an illustrious career that would redefine modern cricket.
The Rise of a Cricketing Icon
Kohli’s debut series against Sri Lanka marked the beginning of a celebrated career in cricket. From 2008 to 2011, he participated exclusively in ODIs and T20Is, gradually becoming a crucial part of India’s white-ball team before making his Test debut in June 2011 against the West Indies.
Before his Test debut, Kohli had already accumulated 1,505 international runs, including four centuries and ten fifties, boasting an average of 47.03 in 42 matches.
His ascent in international cricket was meteoric, breaking numerous records, including 85 centuries and over 28,000 runs across formats, solidifying his status as a modern cricketing icon.
Kohli’s Achievements and Legacy
Kohli was part of the Indian team that clinched the 2011 ODI World Cup, the 2013 and 2025 Champions Trophy, and the 2024 T20 World Cup, establishing a legendary legacy in the sport. He holds the record for the most runs in a single ODI World Cup edition.
His career statistics include 9,230 runs in Tests, 4,188 in T20Is, and 14,941 in ODIs. Kohli retired from T20Is in 2024 and from Tests in 2025, focusing solely on ODIs with the goal of extending his career until the 2027 World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.
