Inter Milan have secured the signature of England international Djed Spence from Tottenham Hotspur in a significant £30 million transfer deal.
The agreement, which includes a 10 percent sell-on clause in favour of Spurs, marks a strategic move by the Italian giants to bolster their right wing-back options ahead of the new season.
Spence, who played a pivotal role in England’s impressive third-place finish at the recent World Cup, faced stiff competition for starting roles at Tottenham. With Pedro Porro firmly established as the first-choice right-back and a host of versatile left-back options such as Destiny Udogie, Andy Robertson, Souza, and Ben Davies in the squad, Spence’s prospects for regular Premier League action were limited. This circumstance made the Serie A switch a logical step for the 24-year-old.
The defender, who joined Tottenham from Middlesbrough in July 2022 for a fee reportedly reaching £20 million, had three years remaining on his Spurs contract, with an option for an additional year. His enthusiasm for the move was reportedly influenced by a successful six-month loan spell at Genoa in Italy during the early part of 2024, where he adapted well to the demands of Italian football.
Inter Milan had initially targeted Al Ittihad’s Moussa Diaby to fill their wing-back vacancy but ultimately settled on Spence after negotiations for Diaby stalled. The club’s pursuit of Spence reflects their intent to strengthen their defensive flanks with a player capable of contributing both defensively and offensively.
Tottenham granted Spence permission to travel to Italy to complete his medical examination amid ongoing talks, culminating in the finalisation of the £30 million package. This transfer marks a notable investment by Inter as they aim to enhance their squad depth and tactical flexibility.
