Jammu and Kashmir fencers Shreya Gupta and Vishal Thapar have brought laurels to the Union Territory by winning Gold and Silver medals respectively at the Senior Commonwealth Fencing Championship being held in Lagos, Nigeria, from August 9 to 14.
Shreya Gupta scripted history by becoming the first-ever woman fencer from Jammu and Kashmir to win a Gold medal at the Commonwealth Fencing Championship. Her outstanding performance, including a key role in the Indian team’s victory, marked a landmark achievement for J&K fencing at the international level.
Adding to the glory, Vishal Thapar secured a Silver medal in the men’s team sabre category, giving Jammu and Kashmir a remarkable Gold-Silver double at the prestigious championship.
The achievements of the two fencers have been widely appreciated by the sporting fraternity of Jammu and Kashmir. Their performances have highlighted the growing talent and international presence of fencing from the Union Territory.
