While remaining with Red Bull remains the prevailing assumption, former F1 driver Gerhard Berger has revealed that active talks are taking place with several teams. “At the moment, there’s a lot of gossip going on, a lot of discussions going on,” Berger told F1. He explained that Verstappen’s primary focus is on whether he can continue to fight for world championships immediately. “One of them is McLaren, one of them is Mercedes, one of them is Red Bull. That’s the typical thing at this time of year.”

Verstappen’s apparent dissatisfaction with Red Bull’s current car performance and balance issues has intensified the uncertainty. Red Bull stands as the only team among the top four yet to claim a Grand Prix victory this season, a stark contrast to their usual dominance. Berger suggested that Verstappen’s hesitation to leave might dissipate if Red Bull shows significant improvements following the summer break. “After the summer break, we will see if Red Bull have fixed their reliability issues, if teams bring a couple of modifications, and who in the second half of the season is the frontrunner,” Berger said.

The former driver emphasized the desire from both fans and insiders to witness a more competitive midfield battle: “All that we want to see, and what the fans want to see, is three or four teams on a similar level – and that everybody has a chance to win.”
