New Delhi, August 12: Satwiksairaj Rankireddy is currently a prominent name in Indian and global badminton. Alongside Chirag Shetty, he has not only strengthened India’s identity in badminton worldwide but has also formed a duo that has elevated India’s status on international platforms.
Born on August 13, 2000, in Amalapuram, Andhra Pradesh, Rankireddy began playing badminton inspired by and older brother. His father was a state-level badminton player. In 2014, he joined the Gopichand Badminton Academy in Hyderabad, deciding to pursue a career in doubles.
Rankireddy and his partner Chirag Shetty have achieved significant international success since they began playing together in 2015, while both were training at the Gopichand Badminton Academy.
Their partnership first made headlines in 2018 when they won a gold medal in the mixed team event at the Commonwealth Games held in Gold Coast. Since then, they have consistently showcased Indian badminton on the global stage, establishing dominance in the men’s doubles category.
In 2022, Rankireddy and Shetty clinched the gold medal in men’s doubles at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. This victory marked India’s first-ever gold in men’s doubles in the history of the Commonwealth Games.
Additionally, Rankireddy has won bronze medals in men’s doubles at the Tokyo World Championships 2022 and the Paris World Championships 2025 with Chirag Shetty. They also secured gold at the Thomas Cup 2022 in Bangkok and a bronze at the 2026 Thomas Cup. The duo previously won gold in the mixed team event at the 2018 Commonwealth Games and achieved gold in doubles and silver with the men’s team at the 2022 Asian Games. In the 2023 Asian Championships, they also won gold in doubles.
As Satwiksairaj Rankireddy turns 26, there are high hopes for him and his partner Chirag Shetty to continue making India proud in the future.
Rankireddy has been honored with the Arjuna Award in 2020 and the Khel Ratna Award in 2023 by the Government of India.
