The highly anticipated trailer of Namit Malhotra and Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana, starring Ranbir Kapoor, Sai Pallavi and Yash, received mixed reactions online. After netizens, Mahabharat actor Gajendra Chauhan has now criticised the makers for giving Kaikeyi a “modern” look. He also opined that the adaptation relies too heavily on visual effects instead of capturing the raw emotional impact of the Hindu epic. While he said he was not impressed by the glimpses, Chauhan added that Ranbir looks good as Lord Ram. However, he feels the cast is already too exposed to the public to be accepted in these iconic roles.

Gajendra Chauhan, who played Yudhishthira in Mahabharat, said that he had watched the but was personally not impressed by it. He felt that modern adaptations of mythological stories often depend too heavily on graphics.
The actor particularly criticised in the exile scene. He told Hindi Rush, “I was not impressed by Kaikeyi’s scene where she asks for Ram’s exile. Her dressing, for one, is very modern. They have given her a modern sari.”
He compared the look of Lara Dutta’s Kaikeyi in Ramayana to the portrayal of the character in BR Chopra’s Ramayana.

According to Chauhan, actors portraying revered mythological characters should ideally not have an overly established public image.
He recalled that when he played Yudhishthira, he was not a well-known face despite having worked in around 25 television serials. He felt that this lack of a strong existing image helped audiences accept him in the mythological role.
“In this , stars are playing mythological characters. It’s very difficult to accept stars in these roles because they already have an established image,” said the veteran actor.

He, however, said that Ranbir looked good in the role of Lord Ram. “He’s looking good. In our imagination, Rama looks a certain way. He looks like that,” said Gajendra. He further said that he is reserving judgment on the actor’s performance until the film releases in theatres.
