India’s largest car manufacturer, Maruti Suzuki is planning to expand its SUV portfolio with seven new models over the next five years. The upcoming lineup will include a mix of all-new models and facelifts, with multiple powertrain options, including petrol, CNG, hybrid, electric and other sustainable fuels such as flex-fuel and CBG (compressed biogas).
Furthermore, the Indo-Japanese automaker is aiming annual sales of 3 units through a range of new models, a multi-powertrain strategy and enhanced focus on digital marketing and targeted marketing.
Maruti Suzuki will also expand its production capacity, warehouses and parts distribution centres across India. In FY 2026-2027, the carmaker ramped up its production capacity by 500,000 units, through the expansion of its Kharkhoda, Haryana and Hansalpur, Gujarat facilities. The company is also setting up a new greenfield manufacturing facility at Khoraj Industrial Estate, Sanand, Gujarat with an annual production capacity of one million units.
What’s Coming?
Maruti Suzuki is yet to reveal names and details of the upcoming SUVs. However, the lineup is expected to include a new sub-4 metre SUV, the Grand Vitara-based 7-seater SUV, Grand Vitara facelift, and Jimny facelift. In major development, Maruti Suzuki is also set to introduce an all-new in-house developed strong hybrid powertrain (codenamed HEV), which is expected to debut on the Fronx facelift in 2027.
According to reports, the new Maruti strong hybrid system will be based on the 1.2-litre petrol engine and could deliver a fuel efficiency of up to 35kmpl. It will be a series hybrid setup, which is said to be significantly more economical and efficient than Toyota’s Atkinson strong hybrid powertrain currently used in the Grand Vitara, Victoris and Invicto.
Maruti Suzuki is also working on a new sub-4 metre SUV (codenamed Y43) to challenge the Tata Punch and Hyundai Exter. It will be introduced as a replacement to the Ignis. The upcoming Maruti mini-SUV is expected to feature a 1.2L, three-cylinder Z12E petrol engine borrowed from the Swift and Dzire. It could also be offered with a CNG powertrain.
