Impressive Performance at Sinquefield Cup
In Missouri, on August 12, Indian Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa showcased his exceptional skills at the Sinquefield Cup by defeating World Championship contender Javokhir Sindarov in the second round.
This victory propelled him into a tie for the early lead, as reported by ESPN. The match was a lengthy battle that remained evenly matched for a significant portion. However, Sindarov made a critical error on the 82nd move, which allowed Praggnanandhaa to execute a series of precise moves, leading to Sindarov’s resignation just 13 moves later. With this win, Praggnanandhaa has accumulated 1.5 points from two rounds, sharing the top position with Fabiano Caruana, Wesley So, Levon Aronian, and Maxime Vachier-Lagrave.
Cairns Cup: Challenges for Indian Women
In contrast, Indian players faced challenges in the second round of the Cairns Cup held in St. Louis. R Vaishali, Divya Deshmukh, and Koneru Humpy collectively managed to secure only half a point. Vaishali drew her match against Bibisara Assaubayeva, while Divya lost to Alice Lee, and Humpy was defeated by Tan Zhongyi. After two rounds, both Vaishali and Humpy have 0.5 points, whereas Divya has one point. Zhongyi and Lee are leading the tournament with two victories each.
Recent Achievements of Praggnanandhaa
Earlier this month, Praggnanandhaa clinched the Grand Chess Tour St Louis Rapid and Blitz title. The 20-year-old secured his victory by drawing against Javokhir Sindarov in the penultimate round, finishing the tournament with a score of 23 out of 35 points, 1.5 points ahead of his competitors.
In June, he made headlines by winning the Norway Chess 2026 title in Oslo, defeating Germany’s Vincent Keymer in the final round. This victory marked a significant achievement for the Indian Grandmaster, who completed a remarkable comeback with four consecutive classical wins.
State Recognition for the Chess Prodigy
In recognition of his accomplishments, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay honored Praggnanandhaa with a cash prize of Rs 50 lakh on behalf of the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu. The ceremony took place at the Chief Secretariat in Chennai, where the Chief Minister also engaged in a friendly chess match with the 20-year-old Grandmaster.
