Bangladesh are making a desperate attempt to save the white-ball series against India. The series was postponed in August 2025 due to geopolitical tensions between the countries.
The sporting ties further deteriorated when the Muhammad Yunus-led Bangladesh government refused to send its team to India, citing security concerns for the T20 World Cup 2026. But Bangladesh under the new PM Tarique Rahman is keen on mending the ties with India.
According to Bangladesh’s sports minister, Aminul Haque, the PM has held talks with the Indian high commission for the sporting ties to resume between the two countries.
Speaking to the press on Monday, Haque said, “It is being worked on at the ministerial level. We want to quickly resolve the deadlock that was created around the Cricket World Cup. God willing, we are hopeful that it will be resolved very soon.”
He also said Bangladesh wants to maintain friendly relations with India through mutual sporting ties.
“We want to resolve the matter quickly. I hope to maintain strong, friendly relations with our neighbouring country through sports. We want to smoothly navigate the current state of uncertainty. The Indian High Commissioner has met with the Honourable Prime Minister. Discussions were also held today with the Foreign Minister and the State Minister. They, too, are very optimistic that the uncertainty surrounding the last T20 World Cup can be resolved quickly. We remain hopeful that the issue regarding the Bangladesh-India series can be settled through the discussions held between the two foreign ministries.”
India Unlikely To Tour Bangladesh
Bangladesh’s efforts, however, might not be enough for the series to go as planned. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) had planned the three ODIs and as many T20Is between the period of late August and September. However, India are reportedly set to play Afghanistan in Delhi during this period, with Afghanistan reportedly confirming the dates, with matches to be played on September 13, 15 and 17 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.
“The ACB hereby confirms that the India tour of Afghanistan 2026 (Event) is scheduled to take place from September 13 to September 17. The ACB further confirms that the dates of the Event have been confirmed and agreed with the BCCI and the venues of the scheduled matches have also been finalised,” ACB CEO Naseeb Khan wrote to the board’s commercial partners in a letter, accessed by Cricbuzz.
