Erling Haaland is one of Manchester City’s biggest stars but despite his importance to the team, he may not become the club’s next captain.
The reason is linked to new manager Enzo Maresca’s unusual idea about the captain’s role.
Why is Manchester City looking for new captain?
Manchester City need a new captain after Bernardo Silva left the club. Silva was an important leader in the dressing room.
Haaland was also part of City’s leadership group, so many fans expected him to be considered for the captain’s armband. However, Maresca seems to have a different plan.
Maresca’s rule could hurt Haaland’s chances
Maresca wants the captain to come near the technical area after scoring a goal. This allows the manager to quickly give tactical instructions. But there is one obvious problem with Haaland, he scores a lot of goals.
As City’s main striker, Haaland is usually involved at the end of attacking moves. If he becomes captain, he would have to keep coming towards the manager after goals. Maresca therefore does not see a striker like Haaland as the ideal captain for his system.
Ruben Dias could be favourite
Ruben Dias appears to be a better fit for Maresca’s plan. The Portuguese defender has already been part of City’s leadership group.
He also plays in central defence, which gives him a good view of the game. Dias can communicate with the defenders and midfielders while staying close to the team’s shape. This makes him a strong candidate for the captain’s armband.
Haaland is still a leader
Not becoming captain does not mean Haaland is not a leader. The Norwegian has become one of Manchester City’s most important players since joining the club.
His goals have played a major role in the team’s success. He also signed a long-term contract with City in January 2025 that runs until 2034. This shows how important Haaland is to the club’s future.
Why a defender could be a better captain
A defender can often see the whole game from behind. This allows a player like Dias to communicate with teammates and organise the team.
He can also speak to the goalkeeper and help keep the defence organised. For Maresca’s style, this could make Dias a more practical choice than Haaland.
Could Phil Foden become captain?
Phil Foden could also be considered for a leadership role. He has been at Manchester City since his academy days.
He is now one of the club’s most experienced home-grown players. Foden could become an important part of City’s next generation of leaders. However, the club may prefer to let him focus on his football rather than give him too many responsibilities.
