Belfast: In a significant shake-up to the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup landscape, Afghanistan has secured direct qualification for the prestigious tournament, leaving two-time champions West Indies to navigate the qualifying stages.
The Afghans cemented their place among the cricketing elite with a commanding three-wicket victory over Ireland in the third One Day International (ODI) of their five-match series, played on Monday, August 10, 2026, at the Civil Service Cricket Club in Belfast.
The win not only gave Afghanistan an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series but also propelled them into the top eight of the ICC Men’s ODI Team Rankings, a critical benchmark for direct qualification. As per the ICC’s qualification criteria, the top eight teams in the ODI rankings by September 30, 2026, along with co-hosts South Africa and Zimbabwe, automatically qualify for the 14-team spectacle.
Afghanistan’s Ascent Confirmed
Afghanistan, currently ranked 8th in ODIs, showcased impressive form against Ireland. 2027 World Cup Format and Hosts
The ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027, scheduled to be held from October 4 to November 21, 2027, will be co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and for the first time, Namibia. The tournament will feature an expanded format with 14 teams, a departure from the 10-team setup of previous editions. The ICC recently approved a new three-stage format for the tournament. It will begin with a Super Series involving the three lowest-ranked qualified teams playing a round-robin, with the winner advancing. The main group stage will then feature 12 teams split into two groups of six, playing each other once. The top three from each group, along with the best fourth-placed team across both groups, will progress to a Super 7 stage, followed by semi-finals and a final. This revamped structure aims to increase competitiveness and enhance the overall fan experience.
