“We’ll Decide In Galle”: India Faces Spin Selection Headache Ahead Of Sri Lanka Test

The first Test of the two match series begins on August 15, with India coming off a six wicket victory over Sri Lanka Cricket XI in a three day warm-up match. The fixture provided valuable match practice for the visiting spinners and helped them understand how local conditions are likely to develop.
Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Manav Suthar and Saransh Jain shared the workload during the warm-up. Jadeja claimed two wickets in each innings, while Kuldeep bowled 18 overs in the match after also delivering a few overs before the game. The spinners found increasing assistance from the surface as the match progressed.
Bahutule said Kuldeep, who recently played five one day matches for Yorkshire in England, had a productive outing while also managing his workload. The other spinners also bowled substantial spells, allowing the team to assess their rhythm, lengths and response to the conditions.
The coaching staff believes the early arrival in Sri Lanka has been particularly valuable for the less experienced members of the squad. Suthar and Jain have had the opportunity to understand the ideal lines, lengths and field placements required on Sri Lankan pitches, while Jadeja brings considerable experience of playing in the country.
The four spinners offer different strengths, making the final selection a difficult call. Jadeja provides experience and accuracy, Suthar has impressed with his control, Jain brings domestic experience, while Kuldeep offers the variation of a left arm wrist spinner.
Bahutule confirmed that all four remain in contention and the final decision will be taken in Galle after assessing the pitch and conditions.
The team management is also expected to decide soon how long the additional net bowlers will remain with the squad, with domestic competitions in India scheduled to begin shortly.
