Former Indian player Ajinkya Rahane believes the BCCI should put an end to the uncertainty surrounding Rohit Sharma’s ODI future and make it clear whether the veteran opener remains central to India’s plans for the 2027 World Cup.
Rohit’s place in India’s 50-over setup has increasingly come under scrutiny as the team begins shaping its squad for the next World Cup. However, Rahane feels the former India captain deserves clarity from the board, rather than being left to deal with continued speculation over his international future.
According to Rahane, a player of Rohit’s experience and stature should know where he stands well in advance, allowing him to concentrate solely on his performances and preparations for the road ahead.
Rahane Endorses Rohit’s Place In Public
Ajinkya Rahane believes Rohit Sharma should be given a definitive assurance about his place in India’s plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup, rather than being judged on his performances from one series to another.
Speaking in an Idea Exchange interview, the former India batter pointed to Rohit’s long-standing contribution to the national team and argued that his experience would be particularly valuable at a major tournament.
“I think it is important to tell Rohit Sharma he is going to play the 2027 ODI World Cup,” Rahane said.
“Just look at his contribution over several years. It has been amazing. You need the experience of such a player at a World Cup.”
Rahane further insisted that Rohit’s credentials should not be questioned every time he goes through a lean run, saying the veteran deserves greater certainty over his future.
“There should be no discussions around it. You can’t look at it series by series because he is such a big player,” Rahane added.
The uncertainty over Rohit’s ODI career had intensified ahead of India’s series in England, with speculation that it could potentially be his final assignment in the format. The opener, however, answered those questions with a commanding performance at Lord’s.
Having scored 11 and 26 in the opening two matches, Rohit turned the series around with a spectacular 138 off 110 balls in the third ODI. His innings once again showcased his ability to produce a match-defining knock when India needed it most.
The performance also strengthened the argument that Rohit’s value cannot simply be measured through a short run of scores, particularly given his experience of playing on the biggest international stages.
Rohit has subsequently retained his place in India’s ODI plans and is set to feature in the three-match series against Australia, beginning October 19.
