When Danni-Elle Townsend made her Major League Pickleball (MLP) debut in 2026 for the Columbus Sliders, questions were raised about her potential: could an Australian newcomer handle the intensity, depth, and pressure of the American pro game?
By the time the regular season ended on August 2, there was little left to doubt.
Townsend was named the 2026 MLP Most Improved Player on August 8, a recognition given by the fans following voting and announced by the MLP after a regular season in which the 23-year-old became one of the league’s most promising new faces.
Sparkling debut
Selected as the third choice women’s player by the Columbus Sliders in the 2026 MLP Draft, Townsend entered the league with considerable expectations. Playing for the defending champions, she found herself up against some of the top women’s players in the world.
She, however, was not bogged down by the pressure of playing at the highest professional level.
At the opening event in Dallas, the Sliders’ Townsend and Alix Truong defeated Los Angeles Mad Drops’ Catherine Parenteau and Jade Kawamoto 13-11 in the women’s doubles match. Townsend also paired up with CJ Klinger to beat Federico Staksrud and Milan Rane 11-8 in the mixed doubles match.
MLP, unlike the PPA Tour, offers a different kind of a challenge as a player needs to adapt to playing with different partners and play diverse responsibilities. Townsend adapted to that culture quite well, finishing her first MLP Dallas weekend with a 7-3 record across her games, losing only once in a women’s doubles match.
Helping Dallas to make turnaround
In June, Dallas Flash traded Hurricane Tyra Black to Columbus Sliders in exchange for Townsend and substantial cash incentive. The move became the catalyst for one of the league’s biggest turnarounds.
Prior to signing Townsend, Dallas had finished last in its Austin group with a 1-4 record and zero standings points. Five weeks later, with Townsend and Alix Truong added to the lineup, the Flash won the San Diego event. They went 4-0 in pool play before beating Columbus 3-1 in the final.
A week later, Dallas did it again. They went undefeated in Chicago, extending their winning streak to 11 matches and defeating Brooklyn in a Dreambreaker to claim another 25 standings points. Townsend and Truong were central to that surge, quickly developing the chemistry that had been missing in the Dallas squad earlier in the season. Dallas Flash are now on an , making Townsend’s impact even more evident.
Attacking game
Her transformation from a rookie starting out in a highly competitive league to a player playing a pivotal role in her team’s resurgence following a poor start demonstrated Townsend’s quality and calibre as a player.
Townsend has an aggressive, instinctive game and is unapologetically confident on the court. She has a penchant for finding space and attacking, often taking the initiative, taking the ball early and embracing the risks that come with playing on the front foot. Her personality matches her style: expressive, energetic and never afraid of the moment.
That fierce combination transformed her into a valuable and preferred player for the Dallas Flash, helping her shed her identity as a newcomer. And perhaps that is the clearest measure of her improvement. Townsend did not merely adjust to MLP in 2026; she grew into it, helped change the fortunes of a struggling franchise and became a player capable of carrying expectations rather than simply meeting them.
