India’s Test series against Sri Lanka has not even begun, but the team has already faced two major setbacks. After Jasprit Bumrah was ruled out, another blow has now come in the form of Sai Sudarshan’s absence.
The young batter has failed to regain full fitness and will miss the upcoming Test series, leaving the Indian team with another selection dilemma.
With Sudarshan unavailable, attention has once again turned towards Sarfaraz Khan. However, the Mumbai batter may not have a straightforward path back into the Indian squad. According to reports, he could face competition from 21-year-old Andhra Pradesh batter Sheikh Rashid, who is emerging as another option for the selectors.
Sudarshan’s fitness had been a concern even when the squad was initially announced. He was included with the understanding that his participation would depend on his recovery. The batter did not travel to Sri Lanka with the rest of the team and also missed the practice matches. On August 8, it became clear that he would not recover in time to feature in the Test series.
With Sudarshan out, Devdutt Padikkal is now the leading candidate to take his place at No. 3 in the playing XI. However, the selectors must also decide who will fill the vacant spot in the squad.
That is where Sarfaraz and Rashid have entered the picture.
Sarfaraz already has international experience and has represented India in six Tests, scoring 371 runs. However, despite making an impressive start to his Test career, he has not been part of India’s Test plans for around a year and a half. His continued exclusion has raised questions about whether the team management will finally bring him back into the squad.
Sheikh Rashid, meanwhile, represents a younger and relatively fresh option. The 21-year-old has accumulated 1,959 runs in 29 first-class matches at an average of around 47, demonstrating considerable experience in domestic red-ball cricket despite his age.
His recent performances with India A could also work in his favour. During the team’s tour of Sri Lanka last month, Rashid scored 63, 20 and 45 in three innings. While those numbers may not be overwhelming, they show that he has been able to contribute consistently in Sri Lankan conditions.
According to the report, Sarfaraz is currently at the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, while Rashid has been asked to reach the facility by August 9. That development has added further intrigue to the selection battle.
For Sarfaraz, the situation is another test of patience. He has already proved himself at the domestic level and has experience of playing Test cricket for India. Rashid, on the other hand, could be rewarded for his recent India A performances and long-term potential.
The selectors therefore have two very different choices: experience in the form of Sarfaraz or youth and momentum with Sheikh Rashid.
With Sudarshan officially out, the decision could soon reveal whether India is ready to give Sarfaraz another opportunity or whether the team management sees Rashid as the better option for the future.
