Sai Sudharsan Ruled Out of India vs Sri Lanka 2026 Test Series Due To Injury: Report

In a significant blow to India’s preparations for their two-match Test series against Sri Lanka, top-order batter Sai Sudharsan has been officially ruled out due to a foot injury.

The 24-year-old, a crucial component of India’s red-ball plans, was unable to achieve full fitness after undergoing rehabilitation at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru.

Sudharsan, who was initially included in the squad subject to fitness clearance, did not travel with the team to Sri Lanka, missing the ongoing three-day warm-up match against Sri Lanka XI in Colombo. According to ANI, despite making good progress in his recovery and participating in batting and fielding drills, he continued to experience discomfort in his right foot.

‘Sai Sudharsan has been ruled out of India’s two-match Test series against Sri Lanka due to an injury. The batter reportedly trained at the Centre of Excellence (COE) in Bengaluru, where he also took part in batting and fielding drills. However, he was unlikely to recover in time for the first Test against Sri Lanka, scheduled to begin in Galle on August 15,’a source stated.

The Sri Lanka Test Challenge

The India tour of Sri Lanka marks the beginning of their ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 cycle. The series comprises two Test matches, scheduled to be played from August 15 to August 27, 2026. The first Test will commence on August 15 at the Galle International Stadium, followed by the second Test at the iconic Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC) in Colombo from August 23. Both matches are slated to begin at 10:00 AM IST/SLST each day.

Impact and Potential Replacements

Sudharsan’s absence creates a void at the crucial No. 3 spot in the Indian batting lineup. He has been in stellar form recently, emerging as the highest run-scorer in India A’s two-match red-ball series against Sri Lanka A last month, where he amassed 332 runs across four innings, including two centuries, at an impressive average of 166. He also registered a fine 81 against Afghanistan in a one-off Test in June. His previous Test appearances include seven matches, scoring 383 runs at an average of 31.91 with three half-centuries.

The likely beneficiary of Sudharsan’s unfortunate injury could be Devdutt Padikkal, who is already part of the touring squad. Padikkal has shown good form himself, notably hitting a brilliant century during the warm-up fixture against Sri Lanka XI in Colombo.

India is already without the services of pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, who was also ruled out due to a left knee injury and replaced by Auqib Nabi. Shubman Gill leads the Indian side, with KL Rahul as his deputy.

Sai Sudharsan’s unavailability underscores the challenges of managing player fitness in a demanding international cricket calendar. The team management will now look to adapt its strategy and rely on the depth of its squad as they embark on a crucial WTC campaign in Sri Lanka.
