In the seamless era of social media, the track ‘Raga of Revenge’ (from this week’s release DC: The Bloody Valentine) has already hit the right spots. Just like this chartbuster, whether the film will also prove to be a blockbuster remains to be seen!
The film follows the life of Devdas , who avenges his mother’s killers, after which he goes to jail. Eventually, he grows up to become one of the dreaded gangsters…but, with a golden heart, which not many are able to recognise, including his own father.
One day, Devdas meets Chandra who works as a commercial sex worker. And since he knows what it means to spend life within four walls, he pulls all stops to rescue not just her, but also many other girls. But when the police catch Devdas, it is Chandra who hatches a master plan to not just recuse him, but also to collect the money that he has to pay someone.
What ultimately happens to Devdas and Chandra? Does Devdas become successful in handing over the money to the concerned person and is his life more than what meets the eye? These things are revealed as the film progresses.
Actors’ performance
The film rides on the sturdy shoulders of Lokesh Kanagaraj (who makes his acting debut with this film), Wamiqa Gabbi and Sanjana Krishnamoorthy. As for Lokesh, he goes for the ‘kill’ (quite literally!) in the film. Even though this is his debut film, he delivers a top-notch performance. In simple words, he gets into the skin of his character like a fish taking to water.
Holding her fort in Lokesh’s kingdom is Wamiqa. By the time the film ends, you will be bound to say ‘Wah-miqa Gabbi’. It will not be wrong to call her one of the pillars of the film. The way she emotes with her eyes and lips needs to be seen in order to be believed. Besides this powerful on-screen duo, there is Sanjana Krishnamoorthy, who shines in her limited screen time. Avinash Raghudevan and others justify their roles and screen time while carrying the film forward.
Direction, Music and Aesthetics
The film has been directed by Arun Matheswaran, who had earlier directed films like Saani Kaayidham (Tamil) and Captain Miller. With DC: The Bloody Valentine, Arun seems to have pulled out all the stops to justify the ‘bloody-ness’ in the title. He is surely one filmmaker to watch out for in the days to come.
Even though Anirudh Ravichander’s music is already a chartbuster, it only elevates the film by notches. The background music is a masterclass in itself. While the cinematography (Mukesh G) is commendable and justifies every frame, Prasanna GK should have done his editing trick a bit more in the second half.
DC: The Bloody Valentine holds immense promise to all those who love the genre of romance amidst bloodshed violence. Even for those who prefer solely love and romance – be assured, after seeing this film you will not feel ‘DC-ed’ (Disconnected).
