Montreal, August 6: Dutch tennis player Talon Greekspor achieved a stunning upset at the Canadian Open by defeating top seed Alexander Zverev with a score of 6-7(3), 6-2, 6-4. This victory is considered one of the biggest of his career.
Greekspor had only secured one win in his last eight tour-level matches. He became the first male player to defeat a top-seeded player at the Canadian Open since Nick Kyrgios beat Daniil Medvedev in 2022. Despite having a 2-9 record against Zverev, Greekspor has consistently challenged him in recent years.
Their previous encounters included a marathon match in 2025, and at the 2024 French Open, Greekspor had a two-break lead in the fifth set but ultimately lost the match. Greekspor’s serve is regarded as his greatest strength, making it difficult for opponents to break. This was evident in his match against Zverev.
Reaching a career-high ranking of 21 in 2023, Greekspor made a remarkable comeback in this match. He had a set point before the tiebreak in the first set but lost his advantage due to defensive play, missing a crucial backhand shot.
Continuing his impressive performance, Greekspor broke Zverev’s serve in the third set after a lengthy rally with an inside-out forehand, leading 3-2. Despite trailing 2-4 and 0-30, Zverev managed to stay in the match by capitalizing on key moments. Greekspor then earned his first break point when Zverev hit a backhand wide, allowing Greekspor to secure the match with a forehand shot.
Zverev recorded 20 winners, while Greekspor converted 17 of 18 net shots successfully. Greekspor will now face either Matteo Arnaldi or Fabian Marozsan in the next round. Notably, six top-10 players have already been eliminated from the tournament, including Zverev, Daniil Medvedev, Flavio Cobolli, Taylor Fritz, and Andrey Rublev, while Felix Auger-Aliassime withdrew due to a back injury.
