Chelsea’s pre-season preparations suffered a setback as Xabi Alonso’s side fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat against Juventus in front of a crowd of just over 43,000 fans at Kai Tak Stadium in Hong Kong on Tuesday.
This loss comes after another defeat against English side Tottenham last Saturday.
A moment of brilliance from Edon Zhegrova in the second half proved to be the difference between the two European heavyweights. The Kosovo international curled an unstoppable effort into the top corner in the 68th minute, leaving Robert Sánchez with no chance and sealing victory for the Italian giants.
The encounter also saw Danny Welbeck and Geovany Quenda make their Chelsea debuts, while Mykhailo Mudryk featured off the bench as the Blues searched unsuccessfully for a late equaliser.
Zhegrova Produces Match-Winning Moment
After a competitive but goalless first half, Juventus finally broke the deadlock in the 68th minute through a moment of individual quality.
Receiving the ball just outside the penalty area, Zhegrova shifted onto his stronger foot before bending a magnificent strike into the top corner beyond Sánchez. The Chelsea goalkeeper was left rooted to the spot as the winger’s superb finish gave Juventus the lead.
Before the breakthrough, Juventus had looked the more dangerous side, with Fabio Miretti and Jeremie Boga regularly testing Chelsea’s defensive shape, while Arkadiusz Milik also threatened in attack.
Chelsea Push For Late Equaliser
Xabi Alonso made wholesale changes in the closing stages as Chelsea searched for a route back into the contest.
Agustín Anselmino, Liam Delap, Roméo Lavia, Dário Essugo, Dastan Satpayev, Josh Acheampong and Subuloye replaced Marco Palestra, Wesley Fofana, Jorrel Hato, Moisés Caicedo, Mahdi Nicoll-Jazuli, Jamie Gittens and João Pedro, while Mykhailo Mudryk came on in place of Nicolas Jackson.
The substitutions briefly injected fresh energy into Chelsea’s attack. Juventus were stretched during stoppage time as Delap used his physicality to release Mudryk down the left. The Ukrainian delivered a dangerous cross from the byline, but substitute goalkeeper Mattia Perin reacted well to gather the ball before Chelsea could capitalise.
Moments later, Estevao drove into the penalty area and saw his effort blocked by the Juventus defence before Roméo Lavia fired a long-range attempt comfortably over the crossbar.
Despite four minutes of added time, Chelsea were unable to find an equaliser as the final whistle confirmed a hard-fought Juventus victory.
