US treasury secretary Scott Bessent on Tuesday said Washington was in talks with Iran and claimed an agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz could be reached in a day or two.
“We’re in talks with the Iranians and I think there is a chance we may have a deal today or tomorrow to open the strait,” Bessent told CNBC.
Asked whether ships transiting the strategic waterway would have to pay a toll, Bessent said that the arrangement would ensure unrestricted passage. “I think it would be freedom of movement,” he said.
His remarks came amid renewed diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions in the region after the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil shipping route, was disrupted.
