State Bureau, Shimla: The various rain-related activities in Himachal Pradesh have claimed the lives of at least 90 people and caused massive damage to infrastructure this monsoon season.
The continuous heavy rainfall in most parts of the hilly state has led to a sharp increase in landslides and water levels in rivers and streams. The administration has been monitoring the situation and has advised the residents to follow the guidelines to avoid any inconveniences.
Old Bridge Swept Away
Earlier on Monday, a massive landslide destroyed a primary school building and at least 500 apple trees in the Nirmand region of Kullu district. The tragic incident has led to panic among the locals and has also put the other nearby building in danger. Apart from this, a bridge built in 1962 over the Bata River in the Paonta Sahib subdivision of Sirmaur District collapsed on Monday afternoon.
Traffic Disrupted In Kullu
A sudden surge in water flow also led to damages to a bridge and two temporary culverts in the Kullu district, leading to severe inconveniences to the locals. The incident has disrupted vehicular movement in several nearby villages, including Mashiyar, Kameda, Majhli, and Thanegarh. The tourists have also been advised to stay updated and plan their travel accordingly in the coming days.
Heavy Rain Likely Till Aug 8
The approaches to newly constructed bridges at Narla and Bhatog between Narla and Bijni in Mandi on the Pathankot-Mandi National Highway have collapsed, blocking vehicular traffic and diverting traffic to the old road. As per the official records, while Paonta Sahib has recorded 75.8 mm of rainfall, Shri Naina Devi Ji has received 68.2 mm of rain.
The administration stated that a total of 109 roads have been closed and 30 drinking water schemes were affected in the state. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday stated that the hilly states will continue to witness moderate to heavy rainfall at least till August 8.
