Michael Smith, former South African first-class cricketer and coach, has been appointed as the batting coach of the Pakistan men’s cricket team, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) confirmed.
Smith, 46, will oversee batting across both red-ball and white-ball formats. According to the International Cricket Council (ICC), he played in 89 first-class matches, 72 List-A games, and 16 T20 matches between 2003 and 2013.
His coaching experience includes roles with Pakistan Super League (PSL) teams Islamabad United, Karachi Kings, and most recently as assistant coach with Multan Sultans during the current season. He has also been batting coach for Australia’s Hobart Hurricanes and Cricket Tasmania, as well as a coaching consultant for South Africa’s KZN Inland and Eastern Province.
Smith’s two-year tenure will begin with his leadership of the Asian Team ahead of the three-match Test series against England, set to start on August 19.
At present, Pakistan is competing in a Test series against the West Indies and is ninth in the ICC World Test Championship standings.
