won her first BWF World Tour crown on Sunday, defeating sixth seed Thuy Linh Nguyen of Vietnam in straight games to win the Taipei Open Super 300 title.
The 17-year-old from Punjab wrapped up a commanding 21-16, 21-16 victory in just 36 minutes over the world No. 21. With this win, Tanvi became the youngest champion in Taipei Open history at 17 years and 222 days, surpassing Tai Tzu Ying’s record. She is also the first Indian woman to claim the title since in 2008.
“I’m really very happy to win this title here,” Tanvi stated after her victory. “I didn’t expect to win a title, but yeah, I just thought I’ll give my best over here. So I was going step by step, match by match. So yeah, every match I played really well here.”
Coached by former Olympic mentor Park Tae-sang at the National Centre of Excellence in Guwahati, Tanvi showed remarkable composure throughout the week, dropping only a single game across the tournament.
“I was quite nervous, but I just thought I will play my 100 percent, what I have in my game, I will play that,” she added. “It was pretty hard for me as well, playing five matches. But yeah, I just needed to be consistent. I have to work harder for playing Super 500 and 750s. So I’ll be keep working hard.”
Tanvi’s rapid rise to global dominance
Throughout the final, Tanvi used her signature steep smashes and deceptive net drops to beat Nguyen. Despite brief mid-game rallies from her opponent, the teenager maintained control during critical moments in both games, eventually converting her fourth match point to seal the victory. In an emotional post-match gesture, Tanvi placed her gold medal around coach Park Tae-sang’s neck.
Her victory adds to a remarkable junior career, which includes double medals at the World Junior Championships and an Asian Team Championship gold. Raised in Hoshiarpur by her mother Meena Sharma, a former national volleyball player who taught herself badminton to coach her, Tanvi continues her steady ascent on the international circuit.
