A young Telugu producer, who made headlines by announcing a series of high-profile films over the past two years, is now reportedly scaling back his ambitious pan-India plans due to changing market conditions and financial pressure.
When these projects were announced, the market was booming. Pan-India films were attracting strong theatrical and OTT deals, and the producer’s banner was said to have a good relationship with a leading streaming platform.
Encouraged by the favourable business environment, the company lined up several big-budget ventures featuring young Telugu stars as well as actors from other film industries.
However, the situation has changed dramatically.
OTT platforms have become more cautious about acquisitions and are offering significantly lower prices than they did a couple of years ago. This has affected the financial viability of several planned projects.
One pan-India film, named after a famous diamond and starring a mid-range Telugu hero, was reportedly shelved after the actor delivered two consecutive box-office failures.
Another pan-India project featuring a different mid-range star, known for family entertainers, has also reportedly been dropped.
Similarly, plans for a sequel starring another mid-range hero were abandoned after the first instalment failed to meet expectations at the box office.
The production house has also put its distribution plans involving films of top stars on hold.
Industry sources say the company expanded aggressively without fully anticipating the market correction.
The combination of rising production costs, lower OTT valuations and uncertain theatrical returns has reportedly placed the banner under considerable financial strain.
Some technicians and post-production companies are also said to be awaiting payment for completed work.
The producer is also believed to have backed out of a proposed pan-India project with a Kannada star after learning that the actor had reportedly demanded Rs 80 crore as remuneration.
