India remained in contention for multiple medals on Day 5 of the 2026 Commonwealth Games as athletes competed across weightlifting, boxing, athletics, swimming and para sports in Glasgow on Monday.
Weightlifter Gyaneshwari Yadav began her campaign in the women’s 53kg final, while boxer Ankush entered the ring for his men’s 80kg Round of 16 bout against Zalaan Jan of Antigua and Barbuda. Earlier in the day, Sachin Siwach secured a place in the men’s 60kg boxing quarter-finals, moving one victory away from guaranteeing India another medal.
At the time of the latest updates, Gyaneshwari was preparing for an 83kg attempt in the snatch competition after the women’s 53kg final got underway. Australia’s Brenna Mae Kean led the standings with a best lift of 73kg, while Papua New Guinea’s Loa Dika Toua was eliminated after failing to register a successful lift in her attempts. Gyaneshwari remained among the contenders as the competition progressed with several athletes yet to complete their lifts.
The boxing schedule also gathered momentum with Ankush taking on Antigua and Barbuda’s Zalaan Jan in the men’s 80kg Round of 16. Competing from the red corner, the Indian boxer aimed to secure a place in the quarter-finals and continue India’s strong run in the boxing competition. Earlier, Sachin Siwach advanced to the last eight in the men’s 60kg category, leaving himself just one win away from a medal after an impressive performance.
India’s athletics campaign produced mixed results during the day. National record holder Gurindervir Singh failed to qualify for the men’s 100m semi-finals, ending his campaign earlier than expected. However, long jumper Murali Sreeshankar and hurdler Tejas Shirse booked their places in their respective finals, keeping India’s medal hopes alive. Several athletics medal events, including the men’s high jump and men’s 110m hurdles final, were scheduled later in the evening.
India also had medal opportunities lined up in artistic gymnastics, para athletics, para swimming, swimming and additional weightlifting events. Athletes including Bindyarani Devi, V Ajaya Babu, Protistha Samanta, Aryan Nehra, Sajan Prakash, Sharmila Dhankar, Shilpa K Shyla, Rakeshbhai Bhatt and Shreyansh Trivedi were all scheduled to compete as the country looked to strengthen its position in the medal standings throughout the day.
Heading into the evening session, India had won four medals at the Commonwealth Games-one gold, two silver and one bronze-while another medal had already been assured in boxing. With multiple finals still to come across different disciplines, the Indian contingent had the opportunity to significantly improve its medal tally before the conclusion of Day 5, making it one of the busiest and most important days of the Games so far.
