Apple will roll out a series of updated chips in all its products, according to a tipster on MacRumors. The leaked information asserts the presence of a new A-series, M-series, S-series, and modem chip to be in the picture and a totally new Wi-Fi and Bluetooth chip named Proxima.
New A- and M-series chips incoming
The leak describes two future A19 chips, a baseline model used in the iPhone 17 Air and iPhone 17e, and an A19 Pro used in the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max. On Macs and iPads, Apple is working on the M5 and M5 Pro chips, which will likely be used in future MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iPad Pro, Mac mini, iMac, and Vision Pro models.
The S11 chip of the Apple Watch Series 11, Apple Watch Ultra 3 and the third-generation Apple Watch SE are also mentioned. Apple is rumoured to introduce a new C2 modem that should be used in the iPhone 17e and potentially in the entire iPhone 18 series.
Proxima: Apple’s custom wireless chip
The most remarkable revelation is a new chip code-named Proxima. This Wi-Fi and Bluetooth combo chip, designed in-house entirely, will substitute Broadcom components in use. The chip will support Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7, a significant improvement over Wi-Fi 6 on Apple TV and Wi-Fi 4 on the HomePod mini.
Proxima will be introduced in new Apple TV and HomePod mini models later this year. Certain iPhone 17 and future Macs and iPads might use the chip beginning as early as next year, with Apple seeking total control over its hardware components.
The informant also disclosed that Apple has done tests on the Mac Pro using an M3 Ultra chip. Nevertheless, the company has reportedly made no plans of coming up with an M4 Ultra. This indicates that the next update of the Mac Pro can be postponed until an M5 Ultra is prepared, as Apple is moving to the strategic transition of chips to all platforms.
