Thalapathy Vijay’s final film, Jana Nayagan, has finally arrived in cinemas as the actor shifts his full focus to his political career. Vijay, who now also serves as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, enjoys an enormous fan following, which helps explain the film’s remarkable box office opening. According to early estimates by Sacnilk, the film earned Rs 41 crore net in India on its opening day. For Vijay’s fans, the film serves as both a fitting farewell to the actor and a launchpad for Chief Minister Vijay’s political journey.  faced a lengthy seven-month delay from its initial January 9, 2026 release due to CBFC certification hurdles. Following several directives from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), key political references, dialogues and visuals were modified which led to its release. It also faced online leak, with reports revealing that up to 1.2 crore (12 million) people had already watched the film before it was officially certified.

The prolonged delay before Jana Nayagan’s release also gave the makers an opportunity to show  real-life political journey on screen. The theatrical version now opens with a title card introducing him as the ‘Honourable Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu’, replacing the traditional Thalapathy Vijay introduction. The film also hints at Vijay’s evolution over the years. Early in his career, he was popularly known as Ilayathalapathy, and Jana Nayagan even includes a light-hearted moment where Pooja Hegde’s character jokingly refers to his former title. As his stardom grew, the prefix evolved to Thalapathy, and today, following his political victory, he is known as CM Vijay.

The film also recreates Vijay’s now-famous hand-slashing gesture, mirroring the one he made in the Tamil Nadu Assembly after assuming office as Chief Minister. Several say this was a dig taken at former political leader,who made the public gesture during the Tamil Nadu election season.

If you’ve watched Jana Nayagan, you would have noticed fans erupting in cheers when Vijay tells Himmler’s henchmen, “What bro, very wrong bro.” The dialogue is a direct callback to one of his most talked-about political speeches. At an event marking the start of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam’s (TVK) second year, Vijay took a swipe at two political parties accusing them parties of engaging in trending hashtags on X and other social media platforms instead of addressing issues such as the three-language policy and the allocation of funds. “What we witness is them fighting like LKG and UKG students on social media, They have a secret understanding, but they want people to believe that they are fighting with each other. Do you think people will believe you? What bro? It’s very wrong bro,” the actor-politician added, getting thunderous applause from his supporters.

Thalapathy Vijay’s iconic punchline, “I am waiting,” traces its origins to the 2012 action thriller Thuppakki, directed by A.R. Murugadoss. Over the years, the dialogue has become one of Vijay’s signature catchphrases. For many fans, the interval block of a Vijay film is incomplete without one of his trademark punchlines, and Jana Nayagan is no exception. During a crucial face-off with Himmler, Vijay delivers new version of this dialogue, getting loud cheers from audiences and serving as a nostalgic callback to one of his most celebrated on-screen moments.

One of the biggest highlights of any Vijay film is his effortless dance moves, and Jana Nayagan gives fans plenty to celebrate. The actor lights up the screen as he grooves to Anirudh Ravichander’s energetic Thalapathy Kacheri, which got loud cheers from audiences. The real crowd-pleaser, however, comes after the song ends. Vijay treats fans to a nostalgic medley by recreating his iconic dance steps from some of his biggest hits, including Aalathota Boopathi, Pokkiri Pongal and Ghilli. The tribute to his illustrious career had fans singing, dancing and celebrating in theatres.

Thalapathy Vijay pays tribute to legendary actor and former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.G. Ramachandran (MGR). In a pivotal scene, Vijay’s character, Thalapathy Vetri Kondan, prepares to take on the villains, and the makers have used artificial intelligence to recreate MGR’s voice. “Thanga Thalapathy (Dear Thalapathy),” MGR is heard saying to Vetri Kondan before handing him a whip. It is an iconic cinematic symbols associated with the legendary actor. Vijay’s introductory sequence includes references to MGR, in the film he also also sings a few lines from the iconic Tamil song Naan Aanayittal from MGR’s 1965 classic Enga Veetu Pillai.

Interestingly, Vijay has become only the second sitting Chief Minister after MGR to have a film released while holding office.
