Patna: The Bihar government on Friday temporarily suspended several internet-based social media and messaging services in parts of Muzaffarpur to prevent the spread of rumours and inflammatory content after recent incidents of unrest.
The move is aimed at maintaining law and order and ensuring peace in the city.
Internet Suspended Till July 26
According to Jagran.com report, the Bihar Police and district administration are on high alert after recent incidents of violence and unrest in different parts of the state. To avoid any further disturbance, the Home Department has taken preventive measures in Muzaffarpur. Based on the recommendation of the Muzaffarpur district administration, the state government has ordered a temporary suspension of internet services in the Town-1 and Town-2 police subdivision areas.
The restrictions will remain in force from 12:30 pm on July 24 until 10:00 am on July 26. The decision was taken after the District Magistrate (DM) and Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) warned that some anti-social elements could use social media to spread false, misleading, or provocative content. Officials believe such posts can disturb public order and increase tensions.
Under the order, around 24 social networking and messaging services, including Facebook, X, WhatsApp, and Instagram, will be blocked. During this period, people will not be able to share messages, photos, videos, or other digital content through these platforms in the affected areas. However, internet services required for authorised government work will continue to function. This is to ensure that official and administrative activities are not disrupted.
What Prompted Temporary Internet Shutdown?
The Home Department said the temporary restrictions are meant to stop the spread of rumours, misinformation, and content that could create communal tension or disturb peace. The administration has further urged people not to believe or share unverified information and to cooperate with authorities in maintaining law and order.
