Mercedes-Benz is set to launch the AMG E 53 Hybrid 4MATIC+ in India tomorrow, adding a plug-in hybrid performance sedan to its portfolio. The launch matters because the E 53 combines AMG performance with an electrified powertrain, something Indian buyers have seen only in a handful of luxury cars so far. Positioned above the regular E-Class, the new sedan is expected to bring more power, sharper dynamics as well as the ability to run on electric power for short trips. Pricing will be crucial, as the E 53 enters a niche segment occupied by high-performance luxury sedans.
Expected Price In India
Mercedes-Benz has yet to reveal prices but the AMG E 53 Hybrid is expected to cost between Rs 1.35 crore and Rs 1.45 crore (ex-showroom). Since the car will arrive in India as a completely built unit, it will command a significant premium over the standard E-Class.
The E 53 is for buyers who want something quicker and more engaging than a conventional luxury sedan but are not ready to move to a dedicated sports car. The addition of plug-in hybrid technology also makes it one of the few performance-oriented sedans in India to offer an electric-only mode.
Final pricing will determine how closely it competes with similar offerings from and Audi.
Engine And Performance
Under the bonnet is a 3.0-litre, six-cylinder turbo-petrol engine paired with an electric motor and a battery pack. Combined output stands at 577 bhp and 750 Nm although AMG’s Race Start function can briefly increase power to 604 bhp.
The setup is paired with Mercedes’ 4MATIC+ all-wheel-drive system and a nine-speed automatic gearbox. According to the brand’s global figures, the sedan can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in around 3.8 seconds.
Unlike a conventional AMG model, the E 53 can also travel short distances using electric power alone which could prove useful in city traffic.

What Else Does It Get?
The E 53 carries several AMG-specific design touches including a different front bumper, larger wheels along with quad exhaust outlets. Inside, it gets sports seats, AMG graphics for the digital displays and Mercedes’ latest infotainment system.
The sedan also comes with adaptive suspension, rear-wheel steering and multiple driving modes that change the car’s behaviour depending on the road and driving conditions.
