Glasgow, July 22: A remarkable lineup of athletes, including Olympians and world champions, is set to converge in Glasgow for the Commonwealth Games 2026, commencing on July 23 and concluding on August 2. Notable Indian athletes such as Neeraj Chopra, Mirabai Chanu, and Lovlina Borgohain will lead the Indian team.
This 23rd edition of the Commonwealth Games will showcase only 10 sports, a reduction of nine from the Birmingham 2022 Games, alongside six exciting Para sports. Events will take place across four venues within an eight-mile radius: Scotstoun Stadium, Scottish Event Campus (SEC), Glasgow International Arena, and Tollcross International Swimming Centre.
The sports schedule for Glasgow 2026 includes athletics & para-athletics, swimming & para-swimming, 3×3 basketball & wheelchair basketball, track cycling & para-track cycling, weightlifting & para-powerlifting, bowls & para-bowls, artistic gymnastics, netball, boxing, and judo.
India had a successful outing at the previous Commonwealth Games, securing 61 medals. For Glasgow, the country has dispatched a contingent of 125 members, which includes para-athletes.
Neeraj Chopra, the 2018 Commonwealth Games champion in javelin, will spearhead India’s athletics team, which also features several national record holders and prominent international medalists like Gurindervir Singh, Animesh Kujur, and Murali Sreeshankar.
The Indian campaign kicks off on Thursday (July 23) with Lawn Bowls, an event where India previously won one gold and one silver medal during the Birmingham Games.
Australia dominated the medal tally at Birmingham 2022, finishing with 179 medals, including 67 golds. Team England closely followed with 176 medals, while Team Scotland secured 51 medals, including 13 golds. Other strong contenders such as Canada, India, and New Zealand are expected to compete fiercely for top honors once again.
