Tata Motors is set to introduce a big update on the Sierra. The model is currently available in a multi-powertrain setup – Petrol, Diesel, and EV. There were rumours that the Sierra would also get a CNG powertrain, but now we have some interesting insider details about Tata’s plans for the Sierra.
Tata Sierra AWD: What’s Cooking?
According to our sources, Tata is currently planning to offer an AWD (All-Wheel-Drive) configuration with the Sierra. Now, this is interesting because the Sierra will be Tata’s first modern ICE car with an AWD setup. The Indian automaker had already announced that the Sierra could soon get an off-road setup.
Technically, it is very much possible. The Sierra is underpinned by the ARGOS platform. It is a completely new platform designed to handle multiple ICE powertrains, from petrol & diesel to CNG & hybrids. Additionally, this architecture can also accommodate an AWD configuration.
The AWD Sierra, however, will be completely different from its EV sibling’s Quad-Wheel Drive (QWD) version. But the off-road features might be identical on both. Exact details are yet to be known. Moreover, our sources also claim there is no CNG version of the Sierra in the pipeline, as of now.
Apart from the inclusion of AWD and some off-road-related features, we don’t expect the Sierra to get any additional comfort or tech features. The same feature suite is expected to be carried over. The AWD option could be offered on the top trims of the model, and it might also increase the final cost by around Rs. 1-1.5 lakh.
What Else?
Another interesting insider update we got is that Tata is looking to replace the Tigor, since it is registering lower sales compared to other Tata models and even its hatchback sibling, the Tiago. The cab version of the Tigor may remain on sale, but for private owners, it might get replaced or discontinued in the near future. There is a good chance that there might be no replacement for it in the pipeline.
