What went wrong with Indigo?

The reason for this problem in IndiGo is pilot shortage, new duty time rules (FDTL Phase 2) and internal planning problems. According to the new FDTL rules, it was necessary to give pilots more rest, less night duty and better breaks. But Indigo could not prepare for this change. As a result, schedules were disrupted and thousands of flights were grounded.

Government in action mode, DGCA cuts schedule by 5%

DGCA (Directorate General of Civil Aviation) has reduced IndiGo’s winter schedule by 5%. Meaning, until the situation improves, the airline will operate fewer flights. Also, DGCA has sought a strict reply from Indigo management. The airline has to submit its new schedule by 5 pm. Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu clearly said that ‘no airline can harass passengers.’ The government said, more than ₹ 750 crore refund has been given to the passengers, baggage tracing and support team are being directly monitored, the conditions at the airports are now becoming normal. PM Modi has also expressed his concern that passengers should not suffer in the name of rules.

Indigo CEO Peter Elbers apologized

IndiGo’s CEO said in a video message, ‘We cannot bring back the cancellations, the entire team is working 24 hours a day, lakhs of passengers are being given refunds immediately, operations are now gradually becoming stable.’
