Hyderabad Metro has included 20 transgender employees in its security team. This step is considered important towards increasing the safety of women, strengthening inclusivity and taking forward the social empowerment policy of the Telangana government.
Hyderabad Metro News: Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) has taken a step which is being discussed across the country. Metro has included 20 transgender security personnel in its frontline security team. This is not just a matter of new recruitments, but a big beginning of social empowerment, security and inclusion.
HMRL is the most advanced urban transit system of the country.
Hyderabad Metro is one of the most advanced urban transit systems in India. Three major corridors with 57 stations and about 5 lakh daily passengers – this system is considered the lifeline of the city. About 30% of these women travel by metro daily, hence passenger security becomes the biggest priority of HMRL. After completion of training of transgender security staff, they have assumed responsibility at selected stations from Monday. This initiative is directly linked to the policy of the Telangana government which promised to provide equal opportunities to the backward and transgender communities.
After all, why did Hyderabad Metro need transgender security?
The question arises: Why does such a large and high-tech transit system need transgender security personnel? In response to this, the Metro management said that such an environment has to be created where every person feels safe and respected. Its main objective is to increase the safety of women passengers. The presence of transgender security staff will create a trusting environment at the station and in the coaches, especially at night and during rush hours.
Are the responsibilities of the new transgender security personnel limited to security only?
No. The role of these 20 security personnel is quite extensive. They will maintain active security at the women’s coaches and key locations. It will also provide way, information and guidance to passengers and make movement at the concourse level easier. They will also assist with baggage scanners and station security systems and provide a “visible and reassuring” presence throughout the station area. With this, many passengers, especially women, will feel more safe and comfortable.
What benefit will this give to the transgender community?
Yes, absolutely. This step is not just a job opportunity, but the beginning of giving recognition to that section of the society which has been away from the mainstream for a long time. Earlier too, the Telangana government had included transgender people in roles like assistant traffic marshals. Now this decision of Hyderabad Metro gives them a stronger place in public service.
Is this initiative going to change the security structure of Metro?
HMRL Managing Director Sarfaraz Ahmed himself has said that these 20 new employees will not only increase security but will also give a big message to the society. Their presence will strengthen frontline services, improve passenger experience and enhance safety of women. It will also make the metro an inclusive, respectful and safe space.
